How Funding Will Help
Eastern wolf adoptions fund the work of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in Ontario’s Frontenac Arch; an ancient granite bridge with rugged, rocky slopes, thick green forests, and beautiful wetland valleys. It is also home to an incredible array of biodiversity, including over 200 bird species, numerous plants, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and mammals. The Frontenac Arch is also home to several species-at-risk, such as the cerulean warbler, and its protection is crucial in order to mitigate some of the threats that these species face, such as habitat fragmentation and pressure from development.

More About the Project

In 2024, NCC’s Coordinator of Conservation Biology Megan Quinn is focused on
habitat restoration in the Frontenac Arch – primarily through the removal of
common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica),
an aggressive invasive species that alters the soil chemistry around it so that
native trees and shrubs can’t grow. This is negatively impacting the ecosystem,
including animals like eastern wolves that have a hard time moving around in
dense stands of buckthorn, and have less food available to them and their prey.

About Eastern wolves

Eastern wolves live in the forests of Canada, where they roam in packs and communicate with each other by howling and barking. They’re apex predators, which means they’re at the top of the food chain, and they have great senses of sight, smell, and hearing to help them hunt and identify their territory.
